The villages of Anhui offer a glimpse into the traditional way of life.

They have faithfully preserved the architectural style, urban layout, and other intangible heritage elements of a cultural region once known as Huizhou.

hongcun

Founded in 1131 during the Song dynasty, Hongcun is one of the finest Hui villages.

It's exceptionally well-preserved, consisting of 150 age-old residences.

Hongcun is also known for its unique ox-shaped layout influenced by traditional culture, reflecting the harmony between humans and nature.

lucun

Lucun distinguished itself for its remarkable wood carvings.

It sits at the confluence of two small rivers, with around 49 well-preserved residences.

Here, the mainstream flat carvings evolved into multi-layered artworks. Some were so complex that they had nine layers and took years to complete.

likengcun

Though strictly in Jiangxi, Likengcun shares the characteristics with villages in Anhui.

It's famous for its extensive and diverse townscape that contains grand houses, ancestral halls, pavillions, wooden walkways, and stone-arched bridges.

Additionally, Likengcun is renowned for being a hub of education.
